La Vista Memorial Park Visit

A family owned cemetery in National City, California

This blog report is about my La Vista Memorial Park visit. It is located in National City, the oldest privately owned cemetery in San Diego.

My photos of a touching comment on one columbaria tomb marker:

“I love you, wait for me!”

The founder of National City

Here is a link to a page of the National City Historical Society website that includes information about Frank Kimball. He and his brothers are recognized as the city founders. The historical society does not credit him with creating the cemetery.

The Muslim section is separate

This area is in the Northwest corner of the cemetery, apart from other graves. This allows the observation of Muslim customs, including burial without a coffin:

Here is a link to an article from 2009 about the San Diego County contract for indigent burials. Mount Hope Cemetery has thousands of unmarked indigent graves. The owner of La Vista offered a lower price for a more dignified grave. Even in the Land of the Dead, Things Change | Voice of San Diego

I could not find the area where indigents are buried while walking around.

Flag plaza

The plaza includes a statue of an angel sitting on a concrete bench.

The pioneer section

As the sign in the first photo indicates, the pioneer section is separate from the newer parts of the cemetery. Non-endowment care means that the cemetery staff do not have responsibility for maintenance of the graves. The descendants of those buried are responsible for keeping the sites clean.
